Lev Yashin
Lev Yashin, famous for always wearing black when playing, is the greatest
goalkeeper the world has ever seen. 22 seasons he played for Dinamo Moscow,
the only club he ever represented, winning five league championships and three
cup championships. He confronted the common attitude of catching the ball,
inventing various ways of simply kicking it away from the penally area when
required.
Yashin was the first choice goalkeeper for the Soviet Union from 1954 to 1967.
In that spell he won 78 caps and played in three World Cups 1958, 1962 and
finally 1966, where the Soviet Union reached the semifinal much thanks to
Yashin's contribution. In 1956 he was a member of the Soviet Union team who
won the Olympics in Melbourne, and four years later he won the European
championships.
One of the proudest moments in his career was when he won the "European
Player of the Year" award in 1963. He still remains the only goalkeeper to have
won that prize.
Larisa Lafynina
Latynina won a medal on every event at the '60 Olympics: go!d in the all-around. on floor and with her team; silver on uneven bars and balance beam; and bronze on vault.
At the '61 European championships, she successfully defended her all-around and floor titles, and added silvers on uneven bars and beam. Latynina earned her second world all-around and floor titles in '62, where she also collected silvers on vault and balance beam.
In '65, Latynina won four silver medals (including all-around) and a bronze at the European championships. She ended her career at the '66 worlds, where (at age 31) she placed 11th all-around
Ytiri Vlasov
Yuri Petrovich Vlasov was born in 1935. He was a world champ in weight-lifting (1959, 1961, 1962, 1963), Olympic super heavyweight champ (1960), silver medallist (1964), He set many weight-lifting records and v/as nicknamed' "the strongest man on Earth".
After finishing "Zhukovsky Air-Force Engineering Academy" in 1959, Yuri Vlasov became a writer. He is an author of the books: "Overcome Yourself (1964), "\Vhite Moment" (1972), "Special Region of China" (1973), "Salty Joys."-(1976), "Justice of Force" (1989), "Yenan Connection" (1989), "Fiery Cross" (1992), etc.
Irina Rodnina
Irina has, with different partners, won more world figure-skating pairs titles тая any other competitor. Between 1969 and 1972 she won the world title with Aleksey Ulanov. The partnership ended when Ulanpv married the silver medallist Ludmila Smimova, and Zaitsev. was chosen as a replacement partner for Itiaa after a nationwide search. In less than a year she and Zaitsev achieved a brilliantly coordinated, partnership and had 12 full scores in the world championship. They married in 1975 and won Olympic ggid medals in 1976 and 1980. Irina retired in 1980 when her first child was born.
Vladimir Sainikov
In the summer Games of 1980 Vladimir Sainikov, became the first human to swim the 1500m at an average speed of under 60 seconds for each 100m! Everybody in the Olympic pool applauded him for a foil five minutes. The "impossible" had been achieved.
Between 1977 and 1986, Sainikov swam the 1500 rn freestyle 61 times at international level. He was unbeaten in every race. 1986 was the first year he failed.
He didn't give up. Vladimir Sainikov had returned to the Olympics, and had become the oldest swimmer in 56 years to win a gold medal. Later that evening Sainikov returned to the Olympic village for dinner. Everyone who was there, and athlete from every sport stood and applauded in recognition of the champions' champion.
